Our Approach

Supporting children, parents, and caregivers together.

Family therapy at Longwood Care takes a systems-based approach — recognizing that every individual within a family influences and is influenced by every other. We work with the whole family to identify patterns, improve communication, and build healthier dynamics that support everyone.

Our solution-focused model promotes healthy functioning at home, in the community, and at school. We enhance caregiver ability to provide effective support to their children, with the aim of building resilience and avoiding more intensive levels of care.

We offer a range of evidence-based modalities tailored to the unique needs and structure of each family, whether that’s a two-parent household, a single-parent family, a blended family, or any other configuration.

Prevention is our first priority.

We view the best solution as prevention. Our youth services are designed to equip children and families with the skills and strategies to manage challenges early — reducing the need and likelihood of formal intervention, hospitalization, or residential placement.

Understanding Trauma in Children

When left untreated, childhood trauma has lasting effects.

Exposure to violence and abuse during childhood is a significant risk factor for serious social, emotional, and behavioral problems. When left untreated, these difficulties can persist into adulthood and have a lasting impact on an individual’s well-being.

Trauma may also affect the parent-child relationship, making parenting a more challenging task. At Longwood Care, we provide trauma-focused cognitive-behavioral therapy to help individuals process and heal from traumatic experiences.

Our therapists work with both the parent and child to help them understand the impact of trauma on their lives — and to learn healthy coping skills that improve overall functioning for the whole family.

Supporting Caregivers

Parents & caregivers are central to our work.

Parents benefit from one-on-one sessions with a therapist to understand the factors contributing to their child’s behavior, target specific challenges, and design a customized program together.

We recognize the importance of caregiver influence and the direct impact parents have on children’s lives. That’s why caregiver support is a part of every aspect of our youth services.

One-on-One Caregiver Sessions

Dedicated sessions to understand contributing factors and design customized behavioral programs.

Reinforcement Strategies

Reinforcing desired behaviors, planned ignoring, and developing consequences, applied consistently at home and school.

School Collaboration

Therapists and parents work together over time to target behaviors exhibited across home, community, and school settings.

Co-Regulation & Co-Healing

Trauma-focused family therapy prioritizes conjoint caregiver-child sessions for co-regulation and co-healing.
